Vanderbilt a close second in media's preseason picks

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- Tennessee edged Vanderbilt as the media's pick to win the Southeastern Conference.

The preseason balloting was done among reporters covering the league at Thursday's media days.

Vanderbilt center Chantelle Anderson was the pick as preseason player of the year.

Anderson received nine of 13 votes to win the award by media covering the SEC media days. Mississippi State's LaToya Thomas received two votes while Tennessee's Kara Lawson and Georgia's Tawana McDonald received one apiece.

Lawson, Thomas and Anderson were joined on the preseason All-SEC team by Florida guard Brandi McCain and Vandy's Zuzana Klimesova and Tennessee's Gwen Jackson. Klimesova and Jackson were tied with four votes apiece.

McDonald did not make the team.
