Arizona St Team Capsule

Posted: Wed March 14, 2001 at 8:57 a.m EST

Coach: Charli Turner Thorne (5th year) Nickname: Sun Devils

Record and conference: 20-10, Pacific-10 Seed, Region and Bid: 11, Mideast, At-large

Previous NCAA Tournament Bids: 3 NCAA Tournament Record: 2-3 Final Four Appearances: None NCAA Tournament Championships: None Best NCAA Tournament Finish: 1982, 1983, Second Round Last NCAA Appearance: 1992, lost to DePaul, 67-65, First Round

Starters: F - Leah Combs (6-2, Jr., 4.4 ppg, 4.0 rpg) F - Betsy Boardman (6-1, Fr., 11.7 ppg, 4.1 rpg) C - Melody Johnson (6-2, Jr., 14.5 ppg, 7.1 rpg) G - Natalie Tucker (5-9, Sr., 5.2 ppg, 2.3 rpg) G - Amanda Levens (5-9, Jr., 15.3 ppg, 3.5 rpg)

Outlook: Head coach Charli Turner Thorne gave birth less than one hour after the Sun Devils earned their first Tournament berth in nine years. Arizona State had its best season since 1991-92 and has a young team that probably won't have to wait another nine years for another bid. The team has a potent offense and Levens shoots better than 40 percent from the arc and has the potential to get hot and take over a game. But this year's team is inexperienced to the type of competition they will have to face at this level and may not make it past the first round.
