STATE COLLEGE, Pennsylvania (Ticker) -- Lisa Shepherd scored 10 of her 18 points in the first half as second seed Penn State raced past No. 15 seed Youngstown State for an 83-63 victory in the first round of the NCAA Women's Tournament Midwest Region. Shepherd scored all her first-half points during a game-opening run as the Lady Lions bolted to a 27-10 lead with 7:07 left. Maren Walseth, Andrea Garner and Katrena Carr added four apiece in the run, which saw Youngstown State go scoreless for 7 1/2 minutes. Penn State shot 46 percent (15-of-33) from the floor in the first half while holding Youngstown State to just 24 percent (9-of-38), opening a 36-21 advantage. The Lady Lions (26-4) improved to 9-1 with seven straight wins in first-round games. They have won 15 straight at the Bryce Jordan Center and host Auburn in the second round on Sunday. Shepherd was just one-third of a dominant frontcourt as Garner scored 14 points and Walseth added 13. At 5-7, All-American point guard Helen Darling grabbed 13 rebounds while dishing out eight assists. Leslie Majewski scored 18 of her 23 points on 3-pointers and Mid-Continent Conference Player of the Year Brianne Kenneally added 19 and 10 rebounds for the Penguins, who shot just 32 percent (24-of-74) and were outrebounded, 51-39. Despite four starters with postseason experience, Youngstown State (22-9) fell to 1-3 all-time in the NCAA Tournament.
