STATE COLLEGE, Pennsylvania (Ticker) -- Freshman Alana Beard scored a season-high 21 points and added six steals as fourth-ranked Duke held on for an 88-87 triumph over No. 10 Penn State.

Beard was 8-of-17 from the field and 5-of-5 from the line in her fourth college game. She helped the Blue Devils (4-0) open an 84-76 lead with 2:45 remaining.

Penn State (2-1) closed with an 11-4 run, capped by Lisa Shepherd's 3-pointer with six seconds left that made it a one-point game. But the Lady Lions were unable to get back the ball and had a 16-game home winning streak snapped.

Iciss Tillis chipped in 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting for Duke, while Sheana Mosch, a native of nearby Clearfield, Pennsylvania, had 14 and five rebounds. The Blue Devils also got 13 points and six assists from Georgia Schweitzer and 12 points from Rometra Craig.

After making only 12-of-33 shots in the first half, Duke shot 54 percent in the second (19-of-35).

Shepherd led all scorers with 27 points and Maren Walseth added 17, nine rebounds, four assists and two steals for Penn State.

The Lady Lions shot 41 percent (24-of-58) and had a 40-37 rebounding edge but committed 19 turnovers.
