IOWA CITY, Iowa (Ticker) -- Angie Welle and Tracy Gahan were dominant as No. 11 Iowa State cruised to an 86-76 victory over rival Iowa.
Welle scored 27 points and grabbed 15 rebounds and Gahan added 26 and 14 as the Cyclones (1-0) opened a 40-30 halftime lead and never looked back. Welle connected on 12-of-13 shots and Gahan was slightly less accurate, making 10-of-14.
Gahan also had five assists, three steals and just one turnover as Iowa State never trailed. Lindsey Wilson scored 10 points for the Cyclones, who shot 59 percent (31-of-53), including a dazzling 29-of-36 performance from inside the 3-point line.
Lindsey Meder scored 23 points on 8-of-19 shooting for the Hawkeyes (0-1), who shot 38 percent (29-of-77) and lost the battle on the boards, 44-36.
Welle snapped a 5-5 tie with a jumper less than five minutes into play and Gahan followed with a basket as the duo began to impose its will on the game.
