KINGSTON, Rhode Island (Ticker) -- Taru Tuukanen scored 28 points as No. 19 Xavier won its seventh straight game, an 83-73 Atlantic Ten Conference victory over Rhode Island.

Xavier (17-2, 8-1 Atlantic 10) took the lead for good at 44-43 on a layup by Jennifer Phillips with 12:47 to play. The Lady Musketeers extended to a 69-60 advantage on two free throws by Tuukanen with just over four minutes to play.

Rhode Island (8-11, 1-6) scored six straight points to close within 69-66, but Xavier's Reetta Piipari responded with a 3-pointer for a six-point cushion with three minutes remaining.

Phillips added 22 points and Piipari 17 as the Lady Musketeers made 23-of-29 free throws to hold off the Rams. Piipari, who leads the nation in assists, had just six to go with eight turnovers.

Shayla Johnson scored a season-high 18 points to lead Rhode Island, which shot 75 percent (18-of-24) in the second half to stay within striking distance. Yatar Kuyateh also scored 18 before fouling out while Neda Djuric made 7-of-10 shots for 15 points.

The game featured 14 lead changes, including 10 in the first half.
