STATE COLLEGE, Pennsylvania (Ticker) -- Freshman Kelly Mazzante led a trio of Lady Lions in double figures with 18 points as No. 18 Penn State defeated fifth-ranked Purdue on Thursday, 75-65, in a Big Ten Conference matchup.
Lisa Shepherd scored 17 points, including 14-of-17 from the free throw line as Penn State (19-7, 11-4 Big Ten) won its 11th in a row at home. Rashana Barnes added 15 points for the Lady Lions, who defeated Purdue for the third straight time in the regular season.
Mazzante made just 1-of-9 from beyond the arc but managed to pull within nine points of breaking Susan Robinson's school record of 502 points by a freshman. She has been named Big Ten Player of the Week three times this season.
Courtney Upshaw and Barnes grabbed nine rebounds apiece for Penn State.
Purdue (24-5, 14-2) had its three-game winnning streak snapped despite 25 points from Katie Douglas. Kelly Komara added 11 points for the Boilermakers, who shot 45 percent (24-of-53).
Penn State enjoyed a 40-28 rebounding edge despite nine boards by Purdue's Camille Cooper.
The Boilermakers captured the 2000 Big Ten Tournament title by defeating the Lady Lions in the championship game.
