KNOXVILLE, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Triola Alexander scored 21 points off the bench as ninth-seeded St. Mary's of California won its first ever NCAA Tournament game, 68-64 over No. 9 Texas in the Mideast Region at Thompson-Boling Arena.

Alaxander made 6-of-12 shots and 9-of-11 free throws for St. Mary's (26-5), which lost its only previous game in the NCAA Tournament to Notre Dame in 1999.

Katie Davis had 15 points and eight rebounds for St. Mary's, which shot just 36 percent (17-of-47) but made 6-of-13 3-pointers. Davis was 5-of-7 from behind the arc.

The Gaels face top-seeded Tennessee in the second round on Sunday.

Stacy Stephens had 21 points and 17 rebounds and JoRuth Woods scored 10 points off the bench for Texas (20-13), which shot 32 percent (26-of-81), going only 1-of-12 from 3-point range.

The Longhorns held a 54-40 advantage on the boards.
