SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- Kristina Andersen scored 23 points and made 10-of-12 shots as fifth-seeded Utah won its opening game in the NCAA tournament, 79-57, over No. 12 seed Fairfield in the Midwest Regional.

Andersen led three Utes in double-figures as the team shot 56 percent (32-of-57) from the floor and 43 percent (7-of-16) from 3-point range.

Amy Ewert scored 15 points and Lindsay Herbert 14 for the Utes (27-3), who advanced to a second-round meeting with Iowa on Monday.

The Utes never trailed in the game and shot a blazing 64 percent (18-of-28) en route to a 35-28 lead at halftime.

Utah improved to 2-11 in 11 NCAA appearances. This was the Utes' first victory since defeating Iowa State, 66-57, in 1997.

Ayanna Brown and Holli Tapley each scored 30 points for Fairfield (25-6), which shot 40 percent (22-of-55) from the field. Tapley knocked down 3-of-7 3-point shots.

Fairfield, which received the school's first at-large bid, made its first appearance in the tournament since falling to Connecticut, 93-52, in the first round of the 1998 season.

The team had just nine total assists with 16 turnovers as it ended the season by splitting two of its last four games.
