BEAUMONT, Texas (Ticker) -- Texas native Brandi McCain enjoyed her homecoming. McCain made 10-of-17 shots, scored 26 points and had five steals as No. 18 Florida used a late first-half run and strong final 20 minutes to rout Lamar, 88-45. McCain, a preseason All-American candidate, was 6-of-10 from 3-point range and had half of her points in the opening 20 minutes. Florida (5-3) came out sluggish, but scored 24 of the final 35 points in the half to open a 39-24 lead at the break. Vanessa Hayden added 14 points and 15 rebounds for the Gators, who held a 48-37 edge on the boards and took advantage of 28 turnovers. Shandy Carter, McCain's high school teammate, and freshman Eva Christian had 14 points apiece for Lamar (2-4), which shot just 35 percent (19-of-55) from the field and got to the free-throw line just six times in the contest. The game was played before a crowd of 1,136 -- the largest turnout for a Lady Cardinal's game since February 18, 1995. |
