COLUMBIA, South Carolina (Ticker) -- No. 18 South Carolina held Charlotte to four baskets in the first half and continued its best start in 13 years with a 72-53 victory.

Playing its first game in eight days, South Carolina limited Charlotte to 17 percent (4-of-23) shooting while building a commanding 40-13 halftime lead. The Lady Gamecocks (11-1) shot 51.5 percent (17-of-33) in the first half before cooling off in the second.

Shaun Gortman scored 16 points and Teresa Geter added 13 and nine rebounds to lead South Carolina, which extended its winning streak to seven games. Gortman also contributed four rebounds and four assists and had four of the Lady Gamecocks' 18 steals.

Petra Ujhelyi chipped in 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting as South Carolina matched its 11-1 start in 1988-89.

Alicia Abernathy scored 10 points but was the only player in double figures for Charlotte (6-5), which returned from a 10-day holiday break. Abernathy made 10-of-10 free throws but was 0-of-6 from the field and committed eight of the 49ers' 24 turnovers.

Charlotte made it respectable by shooting 52 percent (12-of-23) in the second half.
