CINCINNATI (Ticker) -- Debbie Merrill collected a career-high 29 points and 12 rebounds and fueled a dominant first half as 25th-ranked Cincinnati crushed Charlotte, 87-58, in a Conference USA game. Merrill had 20 points in the opening 20 minutes, helping Cincinnati to a commanding 52-29 lead. The Bearcats (13-2, 2-1 C-USA) started the game with a 13-2 run, then scored nine straight points to open a 24-7 lead. Valerie King hit three 3-pointers and had 14 points and six assists as Cincinnati coach Laurie Pirtle recorded her 300th career win. The Bearcats also got nine points and nine assists from K.B. Sharp and committed just nine turnovers while forcing 15. They shot 50 percent (34-of-68) from the field and kept Charlotte under 40 percent (21-of-53). Alicia Abernathy and reserve Peaches Harris each scored 15 points for the Lady 49ers (8-8, 0-3), who have lost four of their last five road games. |
