STATE COLLEGE, Pennsylvania (Ticker) -- Kelly Mazzante became the fastest player in Big Ten Conference history to reach the 1,000-point mark, leading Penn State to a 78-65 victory over 20th-ranked Michigan. A 6-foot sophomore, Mazzante reached the milestone in just her 47th game, shattering the league mark set by Minnesota's Katie Smith, who needed 52 games. Mazzante made 5-of-10 3-pointers but was just 1-of-7 inside the arc for Penn State (11-7, 3-2 Big Ten), which lost to Michigan three times last season and was eliminated from the Big Ten tournament by the Wolverines. Tanisha Wright had 17 points, seven rebounds, six assists and five steals for the Lady Lions, who held Michigan without a basket for more than five minutes while closing the first half with a 13-1 run. Penn State also got 15 points from Rashana Barnes and 11 apiece from Jess Strom and reserve Jessica Brungo. Jennifer Smith scored 22 points on 8-of-11 shooting and Alayne Ingram had 20, but Michigan (11-6, 1-5) committed 19 turnovers and suffered its third straight loss. |
