KANSAS CITY, Missouri (Ticker) -- Angie Welle scored 14 of her 23 points in the second half and made a follow shot with two seconds left to lift No. 10 Iowa State to a 58-56 victory over No. 11 Colorado in the Big 12 Conference tournament quarterfinals. The Cyclones rallied from a nine-point deficit in the second half and the teams were tied five times in the final 12 minutes. Linda Lappe sank a jumper for the Buffaloes with 34 seconds left to forge a 56-56 tie. Iowa State's Lindsey Wilson, who scored 10 of her 14 points in the second half, missed a jumper on the next possession. But Welle grabbed her 15th rebound and scored to give the Cyclones a 58-56 edge. Colorado's Jenny Roulier missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer and Iowa State (23-7) advanced to a semifinal matchup with No. 2 seed Baylor on Thursday. Welle, Wilson and Tracy Gahan accounted for all but two of the Cyclones' 37 points in the second half. Gahan scored 11 of her 13 points in the final 20 minutes and pulled down nine rebounds. Iowa State shot 44 percent (22-of-50) and held an overwhelming 43-24 rebounding edge. The Cyclones grabbed 18 offensive rebounds. Tera Bjorklund scored 13 points and Lappe finished with 11 for Colorado (21-9), which has lost nine of the last 11 meetings with Iowa State. The Buffaloes had their largest lead, 34-25 with 18:36 remaining in the game before Iowa State went on a 17-8 run. Gahan scored seven points during the spurt and Welle added six and sank a pair of free throws to forge a 42-42 tie with 11:06 to go. The teams were tied three more times before Welle buried two free throws to give Iowa State a 56-54 with 81 seconds left. Welle, Wilson and Gahan combined for just 15 points on 6-of-17 shooting in the first half but scored 35 points and made 14-of-19 shots after halftime. |
