WACO, Texas (Ticker) -- Maureen Head scored a career-high 21 points as No. 7 seed Drake recorded its first NCAA Tournament victory in seven years, an 87-69 first-round triumph over No. 10 seed Syracuse in the East Region. The Bulldogs had lost their last five NCAA Tournament games since advancing to the second round in 1995. They improved to 5-8 all-time in the Tournament with a thorough victory over the Orangewomen, who were making their first appearance since 1988. Head made 8-of-11 shots for Drake (24-7), which shot 57 percent (33-of-58) from the floor, including 8-of-15 from 3-point range, and made 13-of-15 free throws. Stephanie Schmitz and Erin Richards scored 16 points apiece as the Bulldogs won for the 12th time in 13 games. Carla Bennett collected 15 points and eight rebounds and Jayme Anderson chipped in 13 points and a career-high eight assist for Drake, which improved to 2-0 all time against Syracuse. The Orangewomen, who were enjoying their first winning season since 1989-90, shot 47 percent (30-of-64) from the floor but were just 4-of-19 from beyond the arc and went to the line only seven times. Jaime James scored 16 points and Julie McBride and Tara Trammell added 12 apiece for Syracuse (18-13), which is winless in its only three NCAA Tournament appearances. Drake faces host seed Baylor in the second round on Sunday. |
