NCAA Women's Basketball Recap (Arkansas-Geo Washington)

Posted: Sat December 5, 1998 at 7:48 p.m. EST

GEO WASHINGTON 74, (13) ARKANSAS 56

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Noelia Gomez scored 14 of her 21 points in the first half as George Washington stunned 13th-ranked Arkansas, 74-56.

Gomez also pulled down 10 rebounds while Khadija Deas came off the bench to contribute 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Colonials (5-1), who held Arkansas to 26 percent shooting in the second half and outscored the Lady'Backs 37-26 in the final 20 minutes.

"These guys play with a lot of confidence," Colonials coach Joe McKeown said. "They think they can play with the best teams in the country. I'm just concerned about keeping everybody healthy and playing one game at a time. It's still early, and at this time of the year, you're going to be a little up and down. We just have to be consistent."

Elisa Aguilar scored 12 points despite making only 3-of-16 shots and Petra Dubovcova added 11 for George Washington, which shot 50 percent (26-of-52) from the floor but only 3-of-15 from three-point range.

Amy Wright scored 16 points and Sytia Messer added 12 for Arkansas (6-3), which has lost consecutive games after a five-game winning streak. The Lady'Backs shot only 32 percent (19-of-60) and committed 19 turnovers.

When we played Memphis, we did not play hard and we did not play smart," said Lady'Backs coach Gary Blair. "Tonight, we played hard, but we played a team that was a lot smarter than us."
