NCAA Women's Tournament Recap (Grambling-Alabama)

CHAPEL HILL, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Dominique Canty collected 19 points and 13 rebounds to lead fifth-seeded Alabama to an 80-68 victory over 12th-seeded Grambling in the first round of the Midwest Region of the NCAA Women's Tournament.

Kaunda Williams collected 14 points and nine rebounds and Shondra Johnson added 14 points, four boards and six assists for Alabama (20-10), which will face North Carolina in Sunday's second round.

Grambling got as close as 33-28 with 17:57 remaining on Demetrice Smith's 3-pointer before Latrish Jones scored four straight points to trigger an 11-2 run that gave Alabama a 44-30 lead with 14:43 to play.

Termika Mitchell poured in 31 points to go with seven rebounds and four assists for the Lady Tigers (25-5), who brought a 21-game winning streak into the tournament.

Grambling shot only 28 percent (25-of-88) from the field, including 7-of-32 (22 percent) from 3-point range.
