NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament Recap (Florida-Arizona)
Posted: Fri March 12, 1999 at 10:34 p.m. EST PISCATAWAY, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Angela Lackey scored a season-high 29 points, including six in overtime, as sixth seed Arizona overcame a 17-point second-half deficit for an 87-84 win over Florida in the first round of the Midwest Region of the NCAA Women's Tournament. Arizona (18-10) advanced to Sunday's second round against the winner of tonight's Rutgers-Dartmouth game. Lackey was 4-of-4 from the free throw line in the extra session, helping Arizona to its fourth win in five games. Florida led 63-46 with 10:48 left in regulation, but the Wildcats closed with a 31-14 spurt to send the contest into overtime. "All I have to say is, `What time is Mass on Sunday?,'" Arizona coach Joan Bonvicini joked. "We never quit. We never lost our focus during the course of the game." The spurt was highlighted by a 12-0 run over 3:27 that cut the deficit to 65-62 with 6:03 left. Lackey had five points in that run. Arizona outscored Florida 7-2 over the last 73 seconds, including a tying layup by Reshea Bristol at the buzzer. Bristol finished with 20 points. Arizona shot 53 percent (16-of-30) after halftime while holding the Gators to 40 percent (14-of-35) over the final 25 minutes. Tonya Washington had 23 points and 16 rebounds for Florida (19-14), which held a 59-40 edge on the boards. Tiffany Travis added 20 points and Tamara Stocks 14 for the Gators, who lost five of their last six games. "It didn't slip away from us," Florida coach Carol Ross said. "We have to give Arizona credit for taking it away. We handled the ball well, but we turned it over at critical times. Anytime the season ends in March, it's disappointing."
