NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament Recap (Louisville-Illinois)

Posted: Fri March 12, 1999 at 8:29 p.m. EST

CLEMSON, South Carolina (Ticker) -- Tauja Catchings made a driving layup with 1.7 seconds left to give seventh-seeeded Illinois a 69-67 win over 10th-seeded Louisville in the first round of the Mideast Region of the NCAA Women's Tournament.

Louisville had a 66-61 lead with 3:03 remaining. But Susan Blauser hit a hook shot in the lane to cut the deficit to three with 2:14 left. Blauser added two free throws to bring the Illini within 67-65 with 1:38 remaining.

Blauser's layup 21 seconds later put Illinois ahead. But Louisville's Jill Morton was fouled by Blauser on a short jumper with 9.6 seconds remaining. An 80 percent free throw shooter, Morton missed the first but made the second to tie it.

Catchings drove past Alison Bass for the winning basket, just her second in 10 attempts. Morton's desperation heave from just beyond halfcourt bounced off the rim.

Blauser paced Illinois (19-11) with 26 points, while freshman Allison Curtin added 21. The Illini will meet the winner of the Florida A&M-Clemson contest in Sunday's second round.

Sharon Bellamy led the Lady Cards (21-11) with 20 points and Morton had 18. Despite a bench depleted by injuries, Louisville's reserves outscored Illinois', 19-11.

Illinois leads the all-time series, 5-2.
