NCAA Women's Tournament Recap (Santa Clara-Iowa St)
Posted: Sat March 13, 1999 at 1:31 a.m EST AMES, Iowa (Ticker) -- Stacy Frese scored 17 of her 31 points in the second half as fourth-seeded Iowa State rallied for a 74-61 win over Santa Clara in the first round of the Mideast Region in the NCAA Women's Tournament. Iowa State improved to 23-7 and will host fifth-seeded Oregon in the second round on Sunday. The Cyclones moved to 9-0 when Frese scores over 20 points. Iowa State was trailing, 47-39, with 16:25 left before going on a 13-2 run to take the lead. Megan Taylor buried a 3-pointer to cap the run, making it 51-49 with 8:47 to play. After two free throws by Annie Garrison tied the score, 51-51, Iowa State took the lead for good on a free throw by Frese with 8:47 left. Santa Clara was outscored the rest of the way, 22-10. The Broncos (22-7) were held to 25 percent shooting (8-of-32) in the second half after hitting 53 percent (14-of-26) over the first 20 minutes. They owned a 38-34 lead at halftime. Tracy Gahan contributed 12 points for the Cyclones, who outrebounded Santa Clara, 41-34.
