NCAA Women's Tournament Recap (Northeastern-North Carolina)

Posted: Sat March 13, 1999 at 12:17 a.m EST

CHAPEL HILL, North Carolina (Ticker) -- LaQuanda Barksdale scored 13 points as fourth-seeded North Carolina overcame a sluggish first half to defeat 13th-seed Northeastern, 64-55, in in the first round of the Mideast Region of the NCAA Women's Tournament.

Juana Brown and Chanel Wright added 12 points apiece for the Tar Heels (27-7), who have not lost a first-round game since 1987. Last year, they gave eventual champion Tennessee a major scare before succumbing, 76-70, in the Mideast Region final.

Betsy Palecek scored 22 points to lead Northeastern (22-8), which was making its first-ever trip to the Tournament after surprising Maine in the America East Conference tournament final.

Palecek scored nine points in the opening half as the Huskies controlled the tempo and held a surprising 27-23 advantage. She was 9-of-17 from the field for Northeastern, which shot 43 percent (23-of-54). North Carolina shot 39 percent (25-of-64).

The Tar Heels, who have scored at least 80 points 22 times this season, got their offense going in the second half and took a 55-51 lead with two minutes remaining. Five of North Carolina's seven regular-season losses came when it was held under 75 points.

"First of all, Northeastern played a great game," North Carolina coach Sylvia Hatchell said. "They had a great game plan, and they did an outstanding job executing the game plan. We tried just about everyone guarding #42 (Betsy Palecek) and finally Chanel Wright got the job done. We also heated up our defense in the end, and that helped us."

The Tar Heels will meet fifth-seeded Alabama in the second round.
