NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament Recap (Cincinnati-Oregon)

Posted: Fri March 12, 1999 at 10:30 p.m. EST

AMES, Iowa (Ticker) -- Shaquala Williams and Angelina Wolvert scored 16 points apiece, leading fifth seed Oregon to a 65-56 triumph over Cincinnati, 65-56, in the first round of the Mideast Region of the NCAA Women's Tournament.

Oregon (25-5), appearing in its sixth straight NCAA Tournament, advanced to the second round, where it will meet the winner of the Santa Clara-Iowa State game on Sunday.

It was the Ducks' second straight visit to Ames in the NCAA Tournament after falling to Rutgers in the first round last year. The 25 wins tied the school record for Oregon, which also posted 25 victories in 1980-81.

The Ducks used 62 percent (16-of-26) shooting in the first half to gain a 38-30 advantage. Williams and Brianne Meharry each scored eight points each in the opening 20 minutes.

Doris Scott led Cincinnati (22-9) with 15 points, but the Bearcats could not overcome 29 percent (9-of-31) shooting in the second half in losing for the third time in five outings.

Cincinnati was making its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 10 years.
