NCAA Women's Tournament Recap (Virginia-Penn St)
Posted: Sat March 13, 1999 at 12:08 a.m EST RUSTON, Louisiana (Ticker) -- Maren Walseth scored 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds as eighth-seeded Penn State held off Virginia, 82-69, in the first round of the West Region of the NCAA Women's Tournament. Helen Darling scored 14 of her 21 points in the first half and grabbed eight rebounds and Lisa Shepherd added 13 points for Penn State (22-7), which will play top-seeded Louisiana Tech in Sunday's second round. Lisa Hosac scored 18 points and Monick Foote added 13, six rebounds and four assists for Virginia (20-9), which shot 53 percent (16-of-30) in the first half but only 32 percent (9-of-28) in the second.
