NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament Recap (Maine-Stanford)
Posted: Fri March 12, 1999 at 10:23 p.m. EST NORFOLK, Virginia (Ticker) -- It was another first-round nightmare for Stanford and coach Tara VanDerveer. One year after being shocked by Harvard, seventh-seeded Stanford lost to Maine, 60-58, in a first round East Region matchup in the NCAA Women's Tournament. Martina Tinklova made two free throws with 16 seconds to put Maine ahead. Stanford's Carolyn Moos missed a eight-foot jumper as time expired. "I'm very proud of our team," said Maine coach Joanne Palumbo-McCallie. "I'm very proud of the way they just hung together when things weren't going quite as well as we would have liked offensively. Stanford plays excellent defense." The Black Bears (24-6) parlayed their best seeding in five trips to their first tournament victory. They will face second seed Old Dominion in Sunday's second round. Moos made two free throws to tie the score at 58-58 with 40 seconds to play. Maine held Stanford (18-12) to 29 percent shooting (17-of-58) from the field. Jamie Cassidy paced the Black Bears with 15 points on only 4-of-19 shooting. Kristen McCormaick had 13 points, while Amy Vachon and Tinklova added 11 apiece. Tinklova also pulled down 11 rebounds as Maine held a 43-36 advantage on the boards. Lindsey Yamaski led the Cardinal with 24 points off the bench, while Regan Fruen added 13. Stanford was 11-of-32 from 3-point range. "I was very disappointed that we didn't do a better job," said VanDerveer. "We just fell short in a lot of areas. We didn't do a good job of rebounding and we didn't shoot well from the perimeter."© 2000 Sportsticker Enterprises, LP
