Posted: Sat March 13, 1999 at 2:11 a.m EST

FORT COLLINS, Colorado (Ticker) -- Carly Deer made a layup with 11 seconds left to give seventh-seeded Southwest Missouri State a 72-70 victory over Santa Barbara in a first-round West Region matchup in the NCAA Women's Tournament.

The teams traded baskets throughout the second half. Jackie Stiles sank a pair of free throws with 33 seconds remaining to give Southwest Missouri State a 69-68 lead.

But Erin Buescher's layup 11 seconds later gave Santa Barbara a one-point edge before Deer's decisive shot. Tara Mitchem made the second of two foul shots with two seconds left to cap the scoring.

Stiles, the nation's leading scorer at 25.9 points per game, finished with 18 and Roshonda Reed added 14 and eight rebounds for the Lady Bears (25-6), who will face Colorado State in Sunday's second round.

Buescher scored 27 points and grabbed nine rebounds but missed 6-of-12 free throws. Kristi Rohr netted 17 points for the Gauchos (26-4), who had a 21-game winning streak stopped.

Santa Barbara shot only 35 percent (11-of-31) in the second half and missed all eight 3-point attempts. The Gauchos shot 38 percent (24-of-62) overall.
