Posted: Sun March 14, 1999 at 12:38 a.m EST BLACKSBURG, Virginia (Ticker) -- Tiffany Krantz scored 21 points as fifth-seeded Auburn defeated Texas, 69-61, in the first round of the East Region of the NCAA Women's Tournament. The Tigers (20-8), have won 13 straight first-round games. They will face subregional host Virginia Tech in the second round on Monday. Krantz scored 11 points in the first half as Auburn opened a 34-32 lead at halftime. The Tigers went on a 14-2 run to start the second half to take a 48-34 advantage with 12:42 to play. Conswella Sparrow keyed the spurt with six points. "Anytime Con (Sparrow) gets the ball 12 or more times, I feel we have a great chance to win the game and that's what happened tonight," said Auburn coach Joe Ciampi. The Longhorns (16-12) used an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to 60-56 with 3:10 left. But Auburn made 5-of-6 free throws and Texas only scored five more points down the stretch. The Tigers improved to 15-0 when leading at halftime. "We got beat by a surperior team tonight," said Texas coach Jody Conradt said. "I thought Auburn had us puzzled all night on the offensive end. We weren't as aggressive as we needed to be on a night we weren't shooting the ball well and that frustrated us a bit." Sparrow scored 18 points as Auburn shot 54 percent (24-of-44) from the field. Edwina Brown scored 18 points and Rashunda Johnson contributed 14 for Texas, which shot 37 percent (22-of-59) and 5-of-19 from 3-point range.© 2000 Sportsticker Enterprises, LP
