NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament Recap (Ohio St-Boston College)
Posted: Sat March 13, 1999 at 10:39 p.m. EST KNOXVILLE, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Becky Gottstein came off the bench to score 23 points and grab 12 rebounds, leading eighth seed Boston College to a 72-59 victory over seed Ohio State in a first-round East Region battle in the NCAA Women's Tournament. Alissa Murphy netted 22 points and Brianne Stepherson added 11 as Boston College won in its first NCAA Tournament appearance. The Eagles advanced to the second round where they will play top seed Tennessee or Appalachian State on Monday. Boston College (22-7) outscored Ohio State 41-25 in the second half and outrebounded the Buckeyes overall, 37-24. The Eagles' defense also was a major factor as it held Ohio State to 32 percent (10-of-31) shooting in the second half. "I was very confident at the half and there were some things we talked about in the locker room," Boston College coach Cathy Inglese said. "We talked about their tendency to get the ball inside and we wanted to cut down their post play." Murphy shot 11-of-12 from the line as Boston College made 78 percent (18-of-23) of its free throws. Ohio State converted on only 55 percent (11-of-20) of its free throws, including 30 percent (3-of-10) in the final 20 minutes. The Eagles won for the fifth time in six games and were victorious for the first time against Ohio State after five previous losses. Michaela Moua scored 16 points as Ohio State (17-12) lost six of its last eight games to close the season. Marrita Porter and Jamie Lewis added 14 points apiece for the Buckeyes. "I really felt we had to put our better defenders on Alissa (Murphy) because not only is she a good scorer, but she's also a good guard," Ohio State coach Beth Burns said.
