NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament Recap (Holy Cross-Duke)
Posted: Sun March 14, 1999 at 12:29 a.m EST DURHAM, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Third-seeded Duke used a strong second half to rout Holy Cross, 79-51, in the first round of the East Region of the NCAA Women's Tournament. The Blue Devils (25-6) extended their home winning streak to 14 games and advanced to the second round for the fifth straight year. They will host St. Joseph's on Monday. Holy Cross (21-8) stayed close in the first half, earning four early leads, the last one at 8-7 with 17:07 left. The Crusaders trailed 42-33 at halftime as Duke's Michelle VanGorp scored 13 points. Duke ripped off a 12-4 run to start the second half, opening a 54-37 lead with 12:27 to play. "We're just happy to get this one under our belts," said Duke coach Gail Goestenkors. "Having a two-week layoff since our last game, I was a little concerned about how we would come out with our execution in particular." VanGorp scored 19 points and Georgia Schweitzer added 14 for the Blue Devils, who turned 20 Holy Cross turnovers into 21 points and outrebounded the Crusaders, 46-18.
