NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament Recap (Liberty-Georgia)

Posted: Sun March 14, 1999 at 12:28 a.m EST

ATHENS, Georgia (Ticker) -- Kelly Miller scored 24 points and twin sister Coco added 17 to lead third-seed Georgia to a 73-52 victory over seed Liberty in a first round Mideast Region matchup in the NCAA Women's Tournament.

Tawana McDonald contributed 12 points for Georgia (24-6), which will face 11th-seeded Southern Methodist in the second round Monday.

Coco Miller has 1,010 career points and became the fourth sophomore in Georgia history to surpass the 1,000-point plateau. Kelly Miller became the third Lady Bulldog to reach the mark earlier this season.

Georgia held a 50-42 lead with 9:10 left in the game, but doubled that advantage with a 16-8 run over five minutes to go ahead 66-50 and put the contest out of reach.

The Lady Bulldogs outscored Liberty, 44-28, in the second half and hit 49 percent (18-of-37) of their shots from the field. Liberty managed only a 30 percent (9-of-30) shooting effort in the final 20 minutes.

"Liberty obviously came ready to play," Georgia coach Andy Landers said. "They played extremely hard and very well. I thought they were aggressive on defense, but we were able to hit some big shots and do a good job on the boards."

Elena Kisseleva and Sarah Wilkerson scored 18 points apiece as Liberty (21-8) had its 12-game winning streak halted. Kisseleva scored in double figures 28 of the last 29 games. Wilkerson's twin sister, Sharon, scored 10 points but connected on only 4-of-18 shots.

"I feel our kids played their kids out tonight," Liberty coach Rick Reeves. "They represented the school, the Lord and the community of Lynchburg very well. I'm proud of the way we played."
