NCAA Women's Tournament Recap (Kansas-Marquette)
Posted: Sat March 13, 1999 at 11:14 p.m. EST WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana (Ticker) -- Brooke Reves scored 15 points as ninth-seeded Kansas rallied past Marquette, 64-58, in the first round of the Midwest Region in the NCAA Tournament. Jaclyn Johnson added 14 points, Nakia Sanford 13 and Lynn Pride 12 for the Jayhawks (23-9), who erased an eight-point deficit in the final 11:10. Kansas will play top-seeded Purdue in the second round Monday. "We have to play better," said Kansas coach Marian Washington, looking ahead to the Boilermakers. "They are a perimeter-oriented team. We have played ball clubs like them before and we didn't do a very good job at that." Kansas clamped down on defense in the second half, holding the Golden Eagles (21-8) to 21 percent (7-of-33) shooting. The Jayhawks won their first-round game for the fourth consecutive year and sank 11-of-16 free throws in the second half. The Jayhawks shot 44 percent (24-of-55) from the field and had 17 assists on their 24 baskets. Johnson had a team-high eight rebounds as Kansas won despite giving up 19 offensive boards. Lisa Oldenburg had 15 points, while Abbie Willenborg added 14 and 14 rebounds for Marquette, which shot less than 30 percent (19-of-64) from the field and had only eight assists. The Golden Eagles hit just 4-of-15 from 3-point range and committed 12 turnovers.
