NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament Recap (No Carolina St-Mississippi St)
Posted: Sat March 13, 1999 at 10:09 p.m. EST LUBBOCK, Texas (Ticker) -- Summer Erb had 34 points and 18 rebounds as 10th-seeded North Carolina State began its quest for another Final Four appearance with a 76-57 victory over Mississippi State in the first round of the Midwest Region of the NCAA Women's Tournament. Erb, a 6-6 center, was 16-of-22 from the field and recorded her 11th double-double of the season, helping the Wolfpack (17-11) advance to a second-round game on Monday against either Texas Tech or Stephen F. Austin. Appearing in their 14th NCAA tournament, the Wolfpack made a surprise run to the Final Four last season, losing to Louisiana Tech. Erb grabbed 18 rebounds in a game for the second time this season and moved into 15th place on the school's all-time single season list with 262. Monica Bates added 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Wolfpack, who shot 50 percent (32-of-64) from the field and outrebounded Mississippi State, 51-31. After opening a 33-28 halftime lead, the Wolfpack shot 64 percent in the second half, outscoring the Lady Bulldogs, 43-29. LaToya Graham and Nitra Perry each scored 16 points for Mississippi State (17-11), which was making its first tournament appearance in school history.
