NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament Recap (St Marys Ca-Notre Dame)
Posted: Sun March 14, 1999 at 12:23 a.m EST BATON ROUGE, Louisiana (Ticker) -- Ruth Riley scored 16 points and Sheila McMillen added 15, leading fifth-seeded Notre Dame to a 61-57 victory over 12th seed St. Mary's, 61-57, in a first-round West Region matchup of the NCAA Women's Tournament. Notre Dame advances to Monday's second round and will face Louisiana State. Notre Dame (26-4) grabbed a 27-18 halftime lead despite shooting only 32 percent (9-of-28) from the floor, holding St. Mary's to 29 percent (6-of-21). McMillen led the Fighting Irish with 12 points. Danielle Green added 12 points for the Irish, who improved to 26-0 when leading at halftime. Notre Dame won for the sixth time in seven games despite playing without starting point guard Nicole Ivey, who tore her ACL during the Big East Conference tournament semifinals. St. Mary's (27-7) did not make the most of its first NCAA Tournament appearance as it could not build on 15 points from Tracy Morris.
