NCAA Women's Tournament Recap (Oral Roberts-Purdue)
Posted: Sat March 13, 1999 at 11:13 p.m. EST WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana (Ticker) -- Katie Douglas scored all 13 of her points in the first half as top-seeded Purdue took control in the first half and cruised to a 68-48 victory over Oral Roberts in the first round of the Midwest Region in the NCAA Tournament. Camille Cooper collected 19 points to lead the Lady Boilermakers (29-1), who matched a school record with their 27th straight win. The winning streak is the longest current run in the nation. Purdue left no doubt of the outcome in the first 20 minutes. Douglas scored five points in the first 6 1/2 minutes as the Lady Boilermakers opened a 13-4 advantage. They took their biggest lead at 36-17 on Stephanie White-McCarty's 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer. The Lady Boilermakers shot just 38 percent (11-of-29) in the first half, but held Oral Roberts to 25 percent shooting (7-of-28) while forcing 14 turnovers. A pair of free throws by Rauna Barrett brought the Golden Eagles within 42-31 with 16:42 remaining. But Purdue went on an 18-2 surge, capped by White-McCarty's layup to take its biggest lead at 60-33 with 8:15 to play. Krista Ragan tallied 21 points to lead the Golden Eagles (17-13), who were making their first-ever tournament appearance after winning the Mid-Continent Conference tournament. "We knew it was going to be a tough ball game," Purdue coach Carolyn Peck said. "I am very proud of our team for handling something very different than we have seen before. We got contributions from a lot of people. The stronger we get as a team, the further we will go in the tournament." Cooper connected on 8-of-10 shots from the floor for Purdue, which shot 38 percent (21-of-56). The Golden Eagles finished at 35 percent (19-of-55) from the field and committed 23 turnovers.
