NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament Recap (SMU-Toledo)
Posted: Sat March 13, 1999 at 9:15 p.m. EST ATHENS, Georgia (Ticker) -- Claudia Brassard scored 20 points and grabbed 14 rebounds as 11th-seeded Southern Methodist upended Toledo, 91-76 in the first round of the Mideast Region of the NCAA Women's Tournament. The Mustangs (20-10), who won their eighth straight game, moved into Monday's second round against the Liberty-Georgia winner. SMU shot 52 percent (19-of-36) from the field in the first half and built a 46-41 lead at the break. They finished at 51 percent (31-of-60). SMU advanced past the opening round for only the second time in six Tournament appearances. Toledo (25-6) had its NCAA Tournament record fall to 3-6. Nici Johnson added 18 points and eight rebounds and Karlin Kennedy scored 15 points for SMU, which outrebounded Toledo, 40-32. Kim Knuth, Toledo's all-time leading scorer, led the way with 24 points on 8-of-20 shooting. Jennifer Markwood added 15 points and seven boards.© 2000 Sportsticker Enterprises, LP
