NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament Recap (St Josephs Pa-Tulane)
Posted: Sat March 13, 1999 at 11:30 p.m. EST DURHAM, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Melissa Coursey and Angela Zampella made 3-pointers during a decisive second-half spurt as 11th-seeded St. Joseph's surprised Tulane, 83-72, in the first round of the East Region of the NCAA Women's Tournament. Coursey, who played all 40 minutes, scored 18 points. Zampella also had 18 to go with 13 assists, while Susan Moran led the Hawks with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Coursey's 3-pointer with 14:33 left in the second half started an 8-0 run. Moran made a layup and Zampella drilled another 3-pointer from the top of the key to put St. Joseph's (23-7) in front, 56-43, with 13 1/2 minutes to play. Tulane (24-6), which had a seven-game winning streak stopped, got no closer than five points the rest of the way. The Hawks will face Duke in Monday's second round. Grace Daley scored 19 points off the bench for the Green Wave, who were outrebounded, 34-19. Tulane shot just under 52 percent (30-of-58) from the field, but St. Joseph's connected on 54 percent (30-of-55) of its attempts.© 2000 Sportsticker Enterprises, LP
