NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament Recap (Wisc Green Bay-UCLA)

Posted: Sun March 14, 1999 at 3:36 a.m EST

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Maylana Martin led four players in double figures with 18 points as third-seeded UCLA coasted to a 76-69 victory over Wisconsin-Green Bay in a West Region first-round battle.

Martin, the Pac-10 Player of the Year, also grabbed eight rebounds while Janae Hubbard had 12 points and 12 rebounds for UCLA (24-7), which will play sixth seed Kentucky in the second round. The Wildcats beat Nebraska, 98-92.

"Obviously, we were more comfortable on our home floor," Martin said. "But this team thrives on intensity and pressure. We were keyed up for the tournament."

LaCresha Flannigan contributed 16 points and Erica Gomez chipped in with 15 and eight assists for the Bruins, who took a 42-24 lead at halftime after shooting 51 percent (18-for-35) from the field. They finished with a 43.5 percent mark (27-for-62) and made 6-of-14 shots from 3-point range.

"A win is great no matter how you take it," Gomez said. "They tried to slow us down. Making us work hard from the outside. They were forcing us to shoot from the outside and our shooters did a good job."

Chari Nordgaard scored 27 points and Melanie Tilque collected 12 off the bench for Wisconsin-Green Bay (20-9), which remained winless in three trips to the NCAA Tournament.

The Phoenix, who had their 15-game winning streak stopped, shot 50 percent (24-for-48) from the field but just 3-of-13 from 3-point range.
