Posted: Sat March 13, 1999 at 10:04 p.m. EST

BLACKSBURG, Virginia (Ticker) -- Michelle Houseright scored 21 points in 24 minutes off the bench as fourth-seeded Virginia Tech cruised to a 73-48 rout of St. Peter's in the first round of the East Region of the NCAA Women's Tournament.

Houseright was 10-of-11 from the field and grabbed six rebounds. Amy Wetzel added 14 points for Virginia Tech and Tere Williams scored 13.

"We had a lot of enthusiasm out there that we hadn't had in a while," said Houseright. "It was good that we started picking it up again out there."

The Hokies (27-2) advanced to the second round for the fourth time in as many tournament appearances. They will meet the Texas-Auburn winner on Monday.

Virginia Tech set a single-season wins record and posted its 16th consecutive home victory. The crowd of 10,052 was the biggest to see a women's basketball game at Cassell Coliseum.

The Hokies took control early, going on a 19-8 run in the first 12:04. Williams led the spree with six points and Katie O'Connor and Houseright added four apiece.

Virginia Tech built its lead to as many as 18 points before going into the locker room with a 38-22 halftime advantage. The Hokies held St. Peter's (25-6) to nine baskets in the first half.

Virginia Tech led by as many as 27 points in the second half as they held the Peahens to their lowest point total of the season.

"We got beat by a superior team tonight," said St. Peter's coach Mike Granelli. "We got beat in all facets of the game, and that's a tribute to their coaches and players."

Patty Marchese paced St. Peter's with 14 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Leah Cromer added 10 points off the bench. The Peahens fell to 0-5 in NCAA Tournament contests.
