NCAA Women's Tournament Recap (Illinois-Clemson)
Posted: Sun March 14, 1999 at 11:30 p.m. EST CLEMSON, South Carolina (Ticker) -- Natasha Anderson scored 18 points as second-seeded Clemson tied a school record for wins in a season with a 63-51 victory over Illinois in the second round of the Mideast Region of the NCAA Women's Tournament. The Tigers advanced to the regional semifinals for the fourth time in 11 Tournament appearances and the first time since 1991. Clemson will face the winner of Monday's Georgia-SMU battle in Cincinnati on Saturday. Alicia Sheeler scored on a hook shot to bring Illinois (19-12) within 54-51 with 3:08 left but it did not score again. Clemson ended the game on a 9-0 run as it made five free throws down the stretch. Anderson scored 10 points in the first 20 minutes to help the Tigers to a 34-24 halftime advantage. Nikki Blassingame added 15 points and 10 rebounds for Clemson, which won despite shooting 37 percent (24-of-64) from the field. Susan Blauser paced the Fightin Illini with 15 points and 10 rebounds and Sheeler added 10 points. Illinois missed all nine 3-point attempts.© 2000 Sportsticker Enterprises, LP
