NCAA Women's Tournament Recap (Alabama-North Carolina)
Posted: Sun March 14, 1999 at 11:24 p.m. EST CHAPEL HILL, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Fourth-seeded North Carolina puts the defensive clamps on Dominique Canty and went on for a 70-56 victory over Alabama in the second round of the Midwest Region of the NCAA Women's Tournament. Canty, who had 19 points in a first-round win over Grambling, scored 14 points in the first half but was held scoreless in the second half as the fifth-seeded Crimson Tide (20-11) scored just 20 points in the final 20 minutes of play. "They put two and three people on me," said Canty. "I tried my best to pass the ball to the open man. But that's all I could do. It was the most effective defense that was played on me all year." "I thought one of the big keys in the second half was the defense of Chanel Wright and Juana Brown playing on Dominique Canty," said North Carolina coach Sylvia Hatchell. "She didn't score in the second half. The defense they played on her made a really big difference." North Carolina (28-7) moves into its fifth consecutive Sweet 16. They will face the winner of Monday's Purdue-Kansas contest in the regional semifinal at Normal, Illinois on Saturday. Alabama held its last lead at 39-38 with 17:58 left before the the Tar Heels went on a 8-2 run to take a 48-41 lead with 13:52 to play. Juana Brown paced the run with four points. The Tide were within 57-54 with 4:43 left on a layup by Shondra Johnson. Carolina built the lead to 66-56 by outscoring Alabama, 9-2, over the next four minutes.
