NCAA Women's Tournament Recap (Maine-Old Dominion)
Posted: Sun March 14, 1999 at 6:07 p.m. EST NORFOLK, Virginia (Ticker) -- Lucienne Berthieu scored 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and second-seeded Old Dominion hounded Maine into 30 turnovers for a 72-62 victory in the second round of the East Region of the NCAA Women's Tournament. The Lady Monarchs (28-3) moved into the Sweet 16 for the fourth consecutive year. They will face the Duke-St. Joseph's winner in Saturday's regional semifinal at Greensboro, North Carolina. Old Dominion took a 36-28 lead after a ragged first half that saw the teams combine for 28 turnovers. Maine (24-7) suffered turnovers on seven consecutive possessions during a two-minute stretch midway through the half. "What a tremendous battle," said Old Dominion coach Wendy Larry. "I don't think we played our best basketball, but I think we've played moments brillance. I though there were times defensively we couldn't play much better than we did." In the second half, Old Dominion held Maine at bay for its 17th straight win. Natalie Diaz scored 13 points and Mery Andrade and Hamchetou Maiga added 11 points each for the Lady Monarchs. Diaz had 10 steals. Jamie Cassidy scored 20 points for the Black Bears, who were in the second round for the first time in five NCAA Tournament appearances. "I'd like to compliment Old Dominion on their very aggressive play," said Maine coach Joanne Palombo-McCallie. "They did a good job defensively. I think it was a very physical game and I think Old Dominion did some nice things."© 2000 Sportsticker Enterprises, LP
