NCAA Women's Tournament Recap (Arizona-Rutgers)
Posted: Mon March 15, 1999 at 12:44 a.m EST PISCATAWAY, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Natasha Pointer led four players in double figures with 18 points as third-seeded Rutgers raced to a 90-47 victory over Arizona in the second round of the Midwest Region of the NCAA Women's Tournament. The Scarlet Knights (28-5) advanced to the regional semifinals for the second straight year and fourth time overall. They will face the winner of Monday's North Carolina State-Texas Tech game in Normal, Illinois on Saturday. Rutgers opened the game with a 16-5 run. Tammy Sutton-Brown scored five points to key the burst and the defense forced four turnovers by Arizona (18-11). The Wildcats were held without a basket for five minutes as Rutgers went on a 13-0 spurt, opening a 29-7 lead with 8:10 to play in the first half. Arizona missed three shots and committed five turnovers during the dry spell, which finally ended when Felicity Willis made a layup with 7:34 to play. Rutgers took a 41-22 halftime lead as it forced Arizona into 15 turnovers. The Knights, the third-best defensive team in the nation, held Arizona to 35 percent (19-of-53) from the field and allowed under 50 points for the eighth time this season. Shawnetta Stewart and Tomora Young scored 16 points apiece for Rutgers, which shot 57 percent (30-of-52). Ten of 12 players who saw action scored for the Scarlet Knights.
