NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament Recap (St Josephs Pa-Duke)

Posted: Mon March 15, 1999 at 11:20 p.m. EST

DURHAM, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Michelle Van Gorp scored 20 points as third seed Duke advanced to the Sweet 16 for the second straight year with a 66-60 victory over St. Joseph's in the second round of the East Region of the NCAA Women's Tournament.

The Blue Devils (26-6) will face second seed Old Dominion in Saturday's regional semifinal in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Duke jumped out to a 21-8 lead with eight minutes left in the first half, capitalizing on six turnovers by the Hawks. Nicole Erickson had five points during the spurt and Lauren Rice added four.

St. Joseph's (23-8) outscored the Blue Devils 19-8 over the rest of the half and trailed at halftime, 29-27.

Duke had a four-point lead before a 10-3 burst opened a 50-39 advantage with 11:29 left. VanGorp had six points and Peppi Browne four to account for all of the scoring in the run.

"I thought we had opportunities in the first half and the second half to really pull away," said Duke coach Gail Goestenkors. "But we couldn't get over the hump and they just kept hanging around. The longer they were there the more I was wooried. Obviously, we have some things that we need and have to work on to get ready for Old Dominion."

Duke made 7-of-12 free throws in the final three minutes as the Hawks could not get closer than five points.

Erickson scored 14 points and made both of her free throw attempts to run her streak to 22. VanGorp and Browne grabbed seven rebounds apiece, helping Duke to a 38-29 advantage on the boards.

St. Joseph's got 16 points from Susan Moran and 15 from Angela Zampella, but had a 12-game winning streak snapped.

"This game not only showed what we're capable of doing, taking Duke to the limit on its home court, but it set the tone for the program, not just for next year, not just for this year," said St. Joseph's coach Stephanie Gaitley. "There's a sense of confidence and an air of confidence right now that this team has that's going to carry us for the future."
