NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament Recap (SMU-Georgia)
Posted: Tues March 16, 1999 at 2:21 a.m EST ATHENS, Georgia (Ticker) -- Twins Kelly and Coco Miller scored 14 points apiece to lead third-seeded Georgia to a 68-55 win over 11th seed Southern Methodist in the second round of the Mideast Region of the NCAA Women's Tournament. The Lady Bulldogs (25-6) advanced to the Sweet 16 for the fourth time in five years. They will face second-seeded Clemson in the regional semifinal on Saturday in Cincinnati. SMU had its school-record eight-game winning streak snapped and failed in a bid to reach the Sweet 16 in men's or women's basketball for the first time since 1956. The game was tied at halftime, 25-25, but Georgia outscored SMU 43-30 over the final 20 minutes. The Lady Bulldogs held the Mustangs to 33 percent shooting (11-of-33) in the second half and 1-of-11 from 3-point range. Pam Irwin-Osbolt scored 13 points for the Lady Bulldogs (20-11) and freshman Tawana McDonald added 11 and 13 rebounds. Karlin Kennedy scored 22 points and Claudia Brassard added 16 for the Mustangs, who committed 22 turnovers.© 2000 Sportsticker Enterprises, LP
