NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament Recap (Notre Dame-LSU)
Posted: Tues March 16, 1999 at 12:49 a.m EST BATON ROUGE, Louisiana (Ticker) -- Latasha Dorsey's 18-foot jumper with 4:01 left ignited a 13-3 game-closing run that lifted fourth seed Louisiana State to a 74-64 victory over fifth-seeded Notre Dame in the second round of the West Region of the NCAA Women's Tournament. Dorsey, who led all scorers with 24 points, broke a 61-61 tie with an 18-footer from the right wing. After Ruth Riley halved Notre Dame's deficit by hitting the second of two free throws, Dorsey drained a 3-pointer to give LSU (22-7) a 66-62 advantage with 1:56 left. Katrina Hibbert and April Brown each made two free throws and Dorsey went 4-of-4 from the line over the final 61 seconds as the Tigers wrapped up their second trip to the Sweet 16 this decade. "My shot was falling for me, so I was more confident shooting it," Dorsey said. "I didn't want to go down on my home floor. It was very emotional. I just knew we needed this game, so I just stepped up and did what I had to do. My team also did a great job." Hibbert scored 15 points, Brown added 12 and Marie Ferdinand contributed 11 for LSU, which will play top-seeded Louisiana Tech in the regional semifinals Saturday in Los Angeles. The Tigers won their first two games in 1997 before falling to Old Dominion. "Let me first congratulate a very good Notre Dame team," LSU coach Sue Gunter said. "Now I know that's no solace to them tonight, but that's a very fine team. I'm just terrifically proud of them (LSU). I thought the game plan was really good." LSU shot just 40 percent (23-of-57) and was outrebounded, 34-27. But the Tigers hit 8-of-15 shots from beyond the arc, forced Notre Dame into 27 turnovers and made 10 more free throws than the Fighting Irish (26-5). Riley collected 20 points and 10 rebounds for Notre Dame, which shot 55 percent (26-of-47) and was 3-of-11 from 3-point range. "I'm extremely proud of my team," Notre Dame coach Muffet McGraw said. "They fought hard and played with a greal deal of effort. I'm also proud of the way they handled the adversity we faced in the last two weeks." The Irish were playing without point guard Niele Ivey, who tore her left ACL in the semifinals of the Big East Conference tournament.© 2000 Sportsticker Enterprises, LP
