NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament Recap (Boston College-Tennessee)
Posted: Tues March 16, 1999 at 2:29 a.m EST KNOXVILLE, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Chamique Holdsclaw celebrated her final home game by tying a career-high with 39 points as top-seed Tennessee rolled past Boston College, 89-62 in the second round of the East Region of the NCAA Women's Tournament. The Lady Vols (30-2) captured their 20th straight NCAA Tournament game and their 39th in a row at home. They are 24-0 in NCAA Tournament contests at Thompson-Boling Arena. Tennesee has reached the Sweet 16 every year since the NCAA began sponsoring the tournament in 1982. Holdsclaw shot 15-of-22 from the field and 9-of-10 from the free throw line in 33 minutes. When she was removed with 3:51 left, she bent down and kissed center court. "Kellie (Jolly) and I had talked about it," said Holdsclaw. "I said I didn't want to do it because I thought it would be too cheesy, but this place has been good to me. It has helped me to mature. I have great memories, and it was a way for me to go out right." Tennessee was playing without starting guard Semeka Randall, who serverly sprained her left ankle during the first round win over Appalachian State. "I think we missed Semeka early, particularly her defensive leadership," said Tennessee coach Pat Summitt. "She sets the tempo for us on defense and calls our defense, particularly in our half court defense. I think the team responded well." Boston College (22-8) hung tough in the first half, leading, 39-35 with 1:50 to go. Tennessee then went on a 7-2 run to end the half to take a 42-41 halftime lead. Holdsclaw with four points and Michelle Snow with three accounted for the scoring. Tennessee turned up the defensive pressure in the second half, outscoring the Eagles, 16-5, to take a 60-46 lead with 13:23 to play. Boston College was held to five field goals in the final 20 minutes. Tamika Catchings added 13 points and 13 rebounds and Michelle Snow chipped in 12 points for the Lady Vols. Nicole Conway and Jamie Cournoyer paced the Eagles with 16 points apiece and Alissa Murphy added 12. "In the first half we showed a bit of what we're capable of," said Murphy. "But, in the second half, Tennessee stepped it up and they have great players who play hard. We were able to see how we can play with them and find what's the next step we need to take."© 2000 Sportsticker Enterprises, LP
