NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament Recap (Rutgers-Purdue)
Posted: Mon March 22, 1999 at 10:34 p.m. EST NORMAL, Illinois (Ticker) -- Rutgers had Purdue's number for 35 minutes. Then Stephanie White-McCarty took over. White-McCarty scored eight straight points in a decisive 14-2 run to lead top-seeded Purdue to its first Final Four in five years with a 75-62 victory over Rutgers in the Midwest Region final. The Boilermakers (31-1) won their 30th straight game and will make the second Final Four trip in school history. They lost, 89-74, to North Carolina in the national semifinal in 1994. Rutgers (29-6) started the game playing the same type of defense that befuddled Texas Tech in the semifinal. It held Purdue to 34 percent shooting (8-of-23) from the field in the first half, building a 34-26 halftime lead. White-McCarty paced the Boilermakers with 22 points and Camille Cooper pumped in a career-high 20. Four players scored in double figures for Purdue. Shawnetta Stewart led the Scarlet Knights with 24 points, while Natasha Pointer and Usha Gilmore added 10 points apiece. Gilmore was 5-of-5 from the field. Purdue went to the foul line 46 times, making 30. Rutgers made 15 free throws and committed 18 turnovers. Purdue coach Carolyn Peck improved to 13-1 in the postseason, including the Big Ten and NCAA Tournaments. The Boilermakers will meet UCLA or Louisiana Tech in the national semifinal in San Jose on Friday.© 2000 Sportsticker Enterprises, LP
