NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament Recap (Duke-Tennessee)

Posted: Tues March 23, 1999 at 12:02 a.m EST

GREENSBORO, North Carolina (Ticker) -- It was an upset that will be talked about for years.

Tennessee's dream of a fourth consecutive national championship ended along with its streak of 21 NCAA Tournament victories as third-seeded Duke shocked the seed, 69-63, in the East Region final.

Sophomore Georgia Schweitzer scored 22 points as Duke earned a spot in the Final Four for the first time in school history. Duke lost to Arkansas in the West Region Final last year.

The Blue Devils will face another Southeastern Conference team in Georgia in the national semifinal in San Jose, California on Friday.

The women's and men's programs will be in the Final Four for the second time since the NCAA took over the women's tournament in 1982. Georgia made both Final Fours in 1983 but no school has won both a men's and women's title.

The physical front line of the Blue Devils (27-7), headed by 6-6 Michelle VanGorp, held Tennessee All-American Chamique Holdsclaw to a season-low eight points. She was 0-of-10 from the field in the first half and fouled out of her final college game with 25 seconds left.

Tennessee (31-3) lost in the regional final for the first time since dropping a 72-56 decision to Iowa in 1993. It fell to 11-4 in regional finals. Semeka Randall paced the Lady Vols with 18 points.

Duke avenged a 74-60 loss to Tennessee on December 6 in the only other meeting between the teams.
