April 28,
1980 Staff writer John Papanek heralded "the dawning of the
Bird era" in Boston as the Celtics, in Bird's first
season, split the first two games of the Eastern Conference
finals with the Philadelphia 76ers. Bird scored 27 in a
Game 1 loss and 31 in the Game
2 win. "He's just done everything the buildup said
he'd do," coach Bill Fitch
gushed.
