Bird was in the midst of leading the Celtics to a six-game series victory over the Houston Rockets for franchise championship No. 16. He had earlier become the third player in NBA history to win three straight MVP awards, and with characteristic bravado he proclaimed, "It's kind of hard to stop a guy who has unlimited range." Despite having just dropped Game 3 for a 2-1 lead at the time of the issue's publication, Bird was not worried: "I think we're the best team in the league, and the best team usually wins."
