G. William Hunter
Executive Director, National Basketball Players Association

Billy Hunter, a former U.S. attorney who has represented clients as diverse as newspaper heiress Patty Hearst and NBA badboy Latrell Sprewell, will be the NBA’s worst nightmare this summer.

It will be up to the 55-year-old Hunter to hold the players’ union line during its negotiations with the NBA and its owners. It’s not unfamiliar territory.

Hunter has litigated cases throughout the nation, he’s founded a couple of different law firms specializing in civil and business litigation, he’s represented several Fortune 500 companies and has been the legal representative for several California cities and municipalities on bond and public financing issues.

Hunter, a former NFL kick returner with the Miami Dolphins and the Washington Redskins, was hired as the NBPA’s executive director in 1996. He has the backing of some of the biggest names in the sport, including Michael Jordan and NBPA President Patrick Ewing -- two superstars who failed in a bid to decertify the union under a previous director.
